Prescott and Bulimia

I have to say that my respect for John Prescott has gone up over the weekend. To admit to something like this in public takes guts and bravery. Considerably more bravery than throwing an egg at his face at close range in fact. How sad then that some people on Iain Dale's blog (though not Iain himself who has shown kindness and sensitivity over this) choose to belittle Prescott for admitting to this condition. If it wouldn't be so distressing for bulimics, I would suggest that they visit a treatment centre and explain to those suffering from the illness why they chose to pick on John Prescott.

No illness deserves mockery, but give me mockery any day over your insufferable priggishness.

Prescott also went up in my estimation today. An expert on BBC Radio 4 commented that men with bulimia are often under severe stress, adding "they may be in powerful positions but they fear they are not capable." I would never have guessed that Prescott had a realistic sense of his own inadequacy. That suggests greater intelligence than I had ever supposed of him.

Surely I am not that important as to be insufferable! ;)

Sorry Burgin, but Dale linked to the Guido story savagely mocking Prescott. Dale's a Tory monster. Get over it.

Spot on.

I used to get really angry whenever Have I Got News For You got around to John Prescott and/or his wife, which would be more or less every week, with either a joke along the lines of "who ate all the pies" or something about their lack of highbrow taste.

Examples:
Michael Burke: "we seem to have tiptoed around John Prescott"
Paul: "its a long journey, some of us have turned it into a sponsored walk"

Doesn't seem so funny now does it?

The relentless pressure to turn into a slim New Labour clone must have been a contributing factor to his illness.
