Twenty Questions to a Fellow Blogger Part CXVIII: Whale Oil Beef Hooked

(Whale Oil)
Whale Oil Beef Hooked is one of New Zealand's most well known and controversial Bloggers

What do you think makes a succesful blogger?

Actually posting pertinent and relevant commentary in your niche. In political blogging it is important to go after your own team just as hard as the others. That shows integrity.

What is your best blogging experience?

Covering the general Election in 2008 from the BlogMobile. We were donated a Winnebago mtorhoome to drive around and we cover most of the North Island electorates. We interviewed as many candidates as possible, editing and up loading to Youtube on the move. The BlogMobile is coming back for a month for the Mount Albert by-election.

And your worst?

When Labour Party bloggers and workers attempted to set me up to smear one of their own MP's. Investigation though revealed the attempted trap, they story didn't hold water and I never published. It showed me though that they thought I needed to be brought down.

Why blogspot?

I don't use Blogspot. I host my own site and deploy using Open Source software. I use Drupal as my content management system. I do have blogspot placeholder that I use to repost to so people behind corporate firewalls can get my posts. I do the same on Wordpress and also use to broadcast to all my social media platforms.

Favourite blogs?

Guido Fawkes in the UK

New Zealand seems to have it's own problem with MP's expenses. What is going on there exactly

During the election campaign in 2005 the governing Labour Party used $840,000 of taxpayer funds to electioneer. They were caught but refused to pay it back. Bloggers attacked them and released a song ccalled Pay It Back. Eventually they were embarrassed into paying it back but only after the Auditor-General investigated and found the payments illegal. The Government then passed retrospective legislation legalising the theft going going back 14 years, mainly because another blogger was taking a private prosecution against the government. The retrospective legislation ended the court case.

How would you define the New Zealand blogosphere?

Right - Enthusiastic self-employed amatuers Left - Paid bloggers from union or Labour party background with few exceptions

Am sure you are asked this all the time, but why the name "Whale Oil Beef Hooked"

I only get asked by dim people who don't get it. It is "Well I'll be F****d" - with an Irish accent

Alaska to shoot bears, Caribou and Moose and India

Is there anywhere abroad you have visited, that you would love to revisit?

Thailand, Australia, in 2007 I circumnavigated Australia by car in 19 days. 15050km in 19 days, biggest distance travelled on that trip in one day was 1400km's
