In Musical Praise of: Radiohead
I just cannot believe I left them out of my 'In Musical Praise of..' series!
Anyway, here is the belated tribute, which is much merited. Q Magazine readers recently voted Radiohead's OK Computer album as No 1 of the best 100 albums of all time, and having got their album I can say with some truth that it is well deserved.
I came across the band when I was at Uni, when my friend Phil Sheldrake would wax lyrical about them. He had their album The Bends and played me the title track in order to make his point. Lyrically I thought the song was good and musically I enjoyed the sharp bar changes and music production.
Que to a few years later and I find that my brother has 'OK Computer', and having borrowed it, I then go out and buy myself a copy.
It is definetly worth a listen, from the sinister opening guitar chords of Airbag, to the Bohemian Rhapsody-like, (in terms of bar changes and length)Paranoid Android, the swimming-pool coziness of Subterranean Homesick Alien, and the sharp and fast and satirical 'Electioneering', believe me it is a must-have album and Radiohead have some first class songwriters among them, who have great ideas.
